Orthopedic surgery or orthopedics (also spelled orthopaedics) is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal (muscle and bone) system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

Biographical Sketch:

Dr. Naharuddin Bin Mohamad Saifi is our Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon. Dr. Naharuddin was graduated from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 1993 and obtained his Postgraduated Degree of Master in Medicine (Orthopaedic) from University of Science Malaysia in year 2000. He has more than 15 years of experience in Orthopaedic and Traumatology in several Government Hospitals, University Hospitals and a Private Hospital (Bukit Mertajam Specialist Hospital).
During this period of time he had managed cases and performed operations in traumatology including pelvic bone injuries, orthopaedic, problems such as correction of limb deformities, joint replacement, joint reconstructions, arthroscopy, limb lengthening, diabetic foot, orthopaedic infections, tumor, paediatric deformities, osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.

Biographical Sketch:

Dr. Yaacob Abas is our Orthopaedic Surgeon (Paediatric). He has completed his MD at National University of Malaysia in 1987 and he started his career as House Officer at Penang Hospital for 1 year and subsequently transferred to Kuala Terengganu Hospital. After more than 1 year in orthopaedic department, he felt very comfortable and very interested to pursue his study in it. He completed his Postgraduate Master’s Degree in Orthopaedic from University Science of Malaysia in 1996.
As Orthopaedic Surgeon he has worked in various hospitals. From Kuala Terengganu Hospital he was transferred to Kangar Hospital as the first Orthopaedic Surgeon in that hospital. There, he had opportunity to do attachment at Arthroplasty Centre, Aurich, Germany in year 2000. After that he was transferred to Kota Bharu Hospital. He went on to continue his Fellowship in Paediatric Orthopaedic for 1 year at Rush Presbyterian St Luke Medical Center and Shriners Hospital for Sick Children, Chicago, USA for 1 year in 2003. In April 2008, due to promotion he was transferred to Seberang Jaya Hospital. Dr. Yaacob has attended many orthopaedic meetings or conferences at national and International levels. He was selected as a coordinator for Paediatric Orthopaedic Fellowship for Malaysia for 2 years.
As we have already aware, most of the hospitals in Malaysia, the highest percentage of their orthopaedic patients is trauma cases. These are the patients that give their doctors most experience to manage. Other than management of trauma patients, Dr. Yaacob is also capable of managing multiple other group of patients in orthopaedic. He is very comfortable in the management of Paediatric Orthopaedic specialized in Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH), Congenital Talipes Equinovarus (CTEV) and other limb deformities and Arthroplasty patients includes Hip Replacement and Total Knee Replacement. In his daily practice, arthroplasty operation is one of the commonest operations done by him, followed by paediatric cases. At the same time he is also confidence in managing patients with spine problems. Another words, he is capable to manage most of the orthopaedic cases.

Biographical Sketch:

Dr. T. Kanagesvaran is our Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon. Dr. Kanagesvaran was born and brought up in Kuala Kangsar, Perak where he completed his secondary education at Clifford School. He then acquired the MBBS Degree from the University of Madras in 1979. He served as a House Officer, Medical Officer and Registrar at the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital before leaving for the prestigious Norfolk and Norwich Hospital in the UK where he received extensive Orthopaedic training. At the same time he was successful in acquiring the FRCS qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, Scotland. Upon his return, he served once again at the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital.
He left government service in 1992 and joined Gleneagles Medical Centre in Penang as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in partnership with an existing practitioner. In 1998 he started his own practice at Medicare Specialists Hospital Bukit Mertajam which was later renamed KPJ Bukit Mertajam Specialists Hospital. He has served as the Medical Superintendent of the hospital. Dr. Kanagesvaran has more than 25 years of Orthopaedic experience. He has extensive knowledge in treating fractures (traumatology) including pelvic fractures, paediatric orthopaedics, joint replacement and reconstruction, diabetic foot, orthopaedic tumors and infections, osteoarthritis and also limb lengthening. He has a special interest in arthroplasty (knee and hip), osteoporosis and spinal surgery.
He has attended several courses in Malaysia, Singapore, India, France, Germany, UK, been on attachment in Hong Kong and participated in meetings in the USA. He has also acquired the CIME qualification and been inducted into the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia. Dr. Kanagesvaran is also active in charitable and spiritual organizations. He is the current president of the Rotary Club of Butterworth which is celebrating its 50th year in Rotary International. He is also Northern Region Organiser and a spiritual healer with Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam Malaysia. He has just been elected as President of Persatuan Amriteshwari Malaysia, Penang Chapter. He is married with three children.

Dr Mohd Farid Bin Saidin graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Kubang Kerian, Kelantan with Medical Degree (MD) in 1999 and Master of Medicine (Orthopaedics) in 2008. He started his carrier as a doctor in 1999, at Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Johor Bharu. He has been serving Malaysia public for 16 years. He was posted as Medical Officer in a district hospital, Hospital Sik; Hospital Sungai Petani and Hospital Alor Setar. His working experienced in various hospitals and environment has molded him towards high energy level to drive the patient management and care, ability to deal with patient as well as the relatives issues and excellent ability to handle emergency situation.

Aside from his vast exposure in the orthopaedics disciplines, he has also participated in various local and international meetings and conferences.

In the field of medical education, Dr Mohd Farid was involved in clinical teaching for undergraduate medical student at University Sains Malaysia during his master training. His passion to teach continues when he was posted to Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim as Orthopaedics surgeon. He was appointed as Honorary Lecturer for AIMST University. He also mentors House Officer and Medical Officer in the Orthopaedics Department.

Dr. Mohd Farid has excellent skills in fixation of the fractured bones, trauma of the joints and interventional pain management. He has special interest in treating back pain without surgery and dealing with complicated wound care and management.

Dr. Joehaimey Bin Johari is our Sessional Consultant Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgery. He graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia with MD degree in 1996 and Masters of Orthopaedic surgery in 2004 and completed Fellowship of spinal surgery from Ministry Of Health in 2013. He completed training for Stichless Spine surgery Under Local Anesthesia for Lumbar which includes Endoscopic Surgery and Pain Relieve Surgery for Lower Back Pain at Prime Surgery Center conducted by Dr Satischandra Gore at Pune India in February 2015.
Dr. Joehaimey Bin Johari has special work in Lower Back Pain management especially for prolapse intervertebral Disc (slipped disc), Denegenerative disc disease (lumbar spinal stenosis and radiculopathy) in elderly, Osteoporotic Back Pain and Spinal Trauma. The main interest for him is pain management for lower back which include stichless spine surgery for lower back and intradiscal transforaminal decompression of the nerve.
In the field of medical education, Dr Joehaimey Bin Johari was involved in clinical training, tutorial and lectures for undergraduates and postgraduate students of HUSM. He also involved in major undergraduate and postgraduates examination as an examiner and also reviewer for International Medical Journal. Currently he is working at Hospital USM at Kubang Kerian as Consultant Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery.He has been treating referral spine patients from all all over Malaysia especially from Northern and Eastern Malaysia.
Dr Joehaimey Johari served the Ministry Of Health for 19 years before taking a new challenge by joining the University in May 2015. With vast exposures in clinical experiences and overseas he hopes he can deliver the best and latest treatment for the spinal patients especially patients with the chronic lower back pain.
At KPJ Penang Specialist Hospital, he provides consultation and related procedures for spinal problems and lower back pain management. His clinic open only on Friday from 9.00 am – 5.00 pm.
