Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill or premature newborn infant. It is a hospital-based specialty, and is usually practiced in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). The principal patients of neonatologists are newborn infants who are ill or requiring special medical care due to prematurity, low birth weight, intrauterine growth retardation, congenital malformations (birth defects), sepsis, pulmonary hypoplasia or birth asphyxias.

Biographical Sketch:

Aside from her vast exposure in the paediatric discipline, she has also participated in various local and international meetings and conferences. In the field of medical education, Dr Tan Ying Beih was involved in clinical training, tutorial and lectures for students of Universiti Islam Malaysia (UIA) and AIMST contributing to the development of the younger generation through her teaching posts in the College. She is also mentors for elective medical students, house officers, paediatric registrars and supervisor for fellow trainee in neonatology in the government hospital.

Education and Fellowship:

Dr. Tan Ying Beih graduated from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia with MD degree in 1999 and Member of the Royal College of Paediatric and Child Health, United Kingdom in 2004. She has been serving the Malaysian public since 1999 at various government Hospitals Malaysia with over 15 years of training and exposure in the field of General Paediatrics and Neonatology. She also had the privilege to do his fellowship training in Neonatology at KK Women and Children Hospital, Singapore in year 2009.

Specialty Interests:

Dr. Tan Ying Beih has special interest in newborn screening, neonatal intensive care, general paediatric diagnosis and management and developmental milestone screening and assessment. She is a qualified user on Griffiths Mental Developmental Scales and also trained on Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development.
